The Brescia House Alumnae Association continues to grow from strength to strength.
Sandrine Rey (Matric 2000) moved to Switzerland for a year, so Skye (da Silva) Livingstone-Blevins (Matric 2003), stepped in as the acting Chairlady of the association. She has been instrumental in arranging the design of a logo specifically for the alumnae association.
In 2015 the main alumnae social event was a cocktail party held at the San Deck at the Sandton Sun on Thursday 12th February. Over 40 past pupils gathered to catch up and network over wine and snacks, joined by Mrs Benedikte Nott and the chairman of the Board, Mr Richard Firth. There were representatives from the class of 1973 to the class of 2013 – 40 years of happy memories! Congratulations to Simonetta Giuricich (Matric 2005) and Skye (da Silva) Livingstone-Blevins (Matric 2003) on a superbly organized event.
The annual alumnae sport afternoon took place on Thursday, 18th June 2015. We started with a very energetic, and closely contested, game of netball. The “oldies” managed to hold their own, despite not having played together as a team ever before. The hockey was also a hard-fought game, with the alumnae-staff emerging victorious 1-0. This year we also had 2 sets of sisters playing against each other. We’re looking forward to 2016, when they can all play for the same side. After the sport, we moved to the atrium for a cocktail party hosted by the school to show off the new facilities to the alumnae, and past and present members of the PTA and the Board of Governors.
During 2015, four classes celebrated significant milestones with reunions. On Saturday 28th March, the Brescia House School matric class of 1975 gathered together for their 40th reunion. Of the original group of 21 matrics, 16 ladies attended the reunion, some of them flying in especially from England, Australia, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. They went on a walk around the school (which many of them had not been back to for 40 years) and then enjoyed a delicious lunch prepared by Allyson Cairns (Matric 2001). Thank you to Sharon (Fraser- Smith) McLintock for all her hard work to make this reunion so special.
On Saturday 11th July 2015, the class of 1985 celebrated 30 years since they were in Matric. Gina (Blake) Forssman, deputy head girl, did a wonderful job of tracking down many of the original 25 girls in their year. After champagne in the staffroom, they went for a tour around the school, followed by lunch in the boardroom for the eight ladies who were able to get back to Brescia. And on Saturday 7th November, 20 members of the original 48 of the class of 2005 returned to Brescia for a reunion. They met in the staffroom for champagne, followed by a walk around the school. Its amazing how much noise 20 ladies can make catching up on each other’s news and discussing all the changes to the school. They then went to “Salsa” for lunch. Thank you to Simonetta Giuricich and Kirsten (Steyn) Wiesner for all they did to make this such a happy day. The class of 1995 will be having their reunion on Saturday 5th December.
We now have 21 alumnae with daughters at Brescia and one with a granddaughter. Having a third generation of the same family is very special and shows that no matter how Brescia grows and changes, it still has the same values.
As usual, our “girls” are always willing to give up their time for the school. Skye (da Silva) Livingstone-Blevins (Matric 2003) was the guest speaker at Valedictory. She warned the girls how hard it is out there in “the real world” but explained how the skills they acquired at Brescia will help them to cope. Kylie (Kuschke) Rankin (Matric 1996), Megan (Kinsley) Winderley (Matric 2002), Taryn McLintock (Matric 2007) and Stephanie da Silva (Matric 2009) all gave up their time to present prizes at the Senior Phase Prize Giving. Leigh (Gaskell) Jacobs (Matric 2005) took on the difficult job of judging House Music with the able help of Fiona Horsfall (Matric 2012) and Tanya Theunissen (Matric 2013). It was also very good to see so many alumnae at both the carol service and at House Music.
Jane Whysall and Angela Kayton (both Matric 2003) with the help of Angela Whysall (Matric 2010) published two alumnae newsletters in 2015 – a huge undertaking considering their busy schedules.
